OVERVIEW

The Centre for Research Excellence in Health in Preconception and Pregnancy (CRE HiPP) offers a small grant scheme specifically for Early and Mid-Career Researchers (EMCRs).

Project support is available up to a maximum of $10,000AUD. The scheme is specifically designed for EMCRs working in the CRE HIPP field and across the priority areas of preconception or pregnancy lifestyle health.

EMCR ELIGIBILITY FOR THE FIRST-NAMED CHIEF INVESTIGATOR (i.e., CIA)

Eligible applicants will be:

• Enrolled in a PhD at an Australian University and have completed their confirmation of candidature review (or equivalent) by the submission date OR an early- or mid-career researcher up to 15 years post-doctoral (based on the date of PhD conferral) employed at Level A-C at an Australian University or Research Institute
• Based in Australia for the duration of the project; and
• Committed to complete the project by 3 rd November 2023.

*Career disruptions will be taken into account.

Applications must include a Chief Investigator or Associate Investigator from CRE HiPP as a mentor on your project.

The research project must align with the New Knowledge activities of CRE HiPP, including:

• Preconception lifestyle health, across any of the knowledge to action steps of formative research; evidence synthesis; and co-design efficacy research; and/or
• Pregnancy lifestyle health, across any of the knowledge to action steps of formative research; evidence synthesis; co-design efficacy research; implementation research; and dissemination, translation and scale-up

Projects that include a cultural adaptation element will be considered favourably.

Applications will be deemed ineligible if:

• An investigator on the submitted application is a Chief or Associate investigator of CRE HiPP (mentors must be identified); and/or
• CIA of the submitted application does not meet the eligibility criteria described above.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

All applications will be assessed against the following criteria:

• Project quality
• Significance and/or innovation
• Potential impact of the project
• Knowledge dissemination plan
• Budget
• Research environment
• Track record of investigators (2-page CV and statement of career context relative to opportunity)
• Suitability and capability of the CRE mentor to support the project (including a letter of support signed by the mentor)
• Alignment of project to CRE HiPP New Knowledge activities
• The ability of the project to benefit the applicant’s career progression.

GENERAL INFORMATION

• This grant scheme is designed to provide financial support for high quality projects that align with CRE research priorities. There are no specific restrictions, however, all budget items must be appropriately justified. The following are examples of suitable activities:
  • Data collection and related activities;
  • Visiting a mentor, researcher or colleague at another lab/research group;
  • Hosting a researcher or colleague from another lab/research group;
  • Professional development activities that are essential to the conduct of the project (e.g., workshops on statistical methods, training on workshop
    facilitation);
  • Translation and/or knowledge mobilisation activities; and
  • Employment of a research assistant.
• Applications may include a maximum of 5 Chief Investigators and 1 mentor.
• Grants will be awarded for high quality, well documented applications, with priority given to applications that demonstrate no alternative funding source.
• A maximum of $10,000 project support can be awarded to an applicant as CIA over the life of CRE HiPP.
• Unused funds must be returned to CRE HiPP if they are not expended by the end of project deadline.

REPORTING REQUIREMENTS

At project completion, grant recipients must submit a brief report to the CRE Training and Mentoring Committee. The report should include a description of any outputs achieved during the project (e.g., peer reviewed publications, conference presentations, community impact), a description of the benefit of the activities undertaken and a summary of how the funds were spent.
